Flashback: Debt Ceiling Follies - Then and Now

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America's debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. government can't pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our government's reckless fiscal policies. ... Increasing America's debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that 'the buck stops here.' Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better."

-- Illinois Senator Barack Obama, Senate floor speech, March 2006

"We all want a government that lives within its means, but there are still things we need to pay for as a country -– things like new roads and bridges; weather satellites and food inspection; services to veterans and medical research."

-- President Barack Obama, Address to the nation, July 2011

Isn't it funny how it was okay not to raise the debt ceiling in 2006 under a Republican administration and now it would be downright catastrophic to fail raising it?  Furthermore, isn't it ironic that the man (and his party) that raised federal spending by a third as soon as he gained power can utter such hypocritical words without any shame whatsoever?

The impostor-in-chief has nothing to worry about. The debt ceiling will be raised thanks to class warriors, RINOs, and other politicians who lose their nerve at the last moment; and we will continue on our merry way to financial destruction. Absent a complete overhaul of our political system, there is nothing that can save us with this gang of clowns running our country.

Amen. Both parties need to have a big injection of real peopleism. They are both out of touch with what the people want, and if they know what we want, they just don't care.

Double-speak is the only thing zero is good at. He has lied to the American people so often that most wouldn't believe him if he said it was dark outside at midnight without checking first.

Overhaul is our only solution. Big money going to both sides has ruined representative government save for a few statesmen. Rubio and West come to mind.

What is amazing is the fact that there are no crowds with torches and pitchforks gathering. It speaks well of American society or to their general stupidity. Most other countries have mass protests/riots if the retirement age is raised. We on the otherhand only worry if the football season might be delayed.

I agree with TGP! THEY are out of touch with US and WE THE PEOPLE own the government. Seems that THEY need to adjust to US, not the other way around.

Am-Pat- You probably hear Chris Plante (WMAL) in your area - I frequently quote him:

"If it weren't for double standards, Liberals would have no standards at all."

In my humble opinion a return to the Constitution and Republican principles is the answer. I just watched the vote on the "Boehner Bill" and 22 Republicans voted against it. That might play well at home but it doesn't move the ball down the field.

The Constitution establishes a system of elegant checks and balances that is intended to frustrate wild swings (with or without pitch forks H-Nox) in either the electorate or the government. For two years we had a near usurpation of our Republic and now we are in the process of getting things back to normal.

It's going to take time, another election or two, and the engagement of a whole lot of people. They need to learn to pull together - that hasn't happened on the Right yet.

Ah yes, Chris is a great conservative with fire in his belly - kinda like Mark Levin.

As far as the constitution, they are trampling it daily. I am fed up and typical conservative out there is complacent and thinks that it will all work out. I am not so sure. We need the sane red states to seccede or there will have to be a revolution one day.

Am-Pat, The last time that was tried it didn't end well. With that said there is a school of thought that responsible states like Texas, Virginia, North Dakota, Oklahoma, among others will baulk at having to financially bailout irresponsible governments like California, New York, Massachusetts, and Illinois. Instead of Blue vs. Gray this time it will by Blue (D) vs. Red (R).

If that were to happen you could see additional fractures. Northern California (minus San Francisco), all of Washington minus Seattle, and most of New York are more conservative and could break away from those States to join the new United Responsible States of America.

We can only hope so my friend.
There is no way I am having my 7 and 12 year olds be stuck with the irresponsibility of today's progressives - at any cost.
Seccession would be much preferable but, as a last resort, I will do whatever is necessary if we become even more subjugated to the government than we already are.

Just keep on giving 'em hell!

Aye, Aye - you as well.
